BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (March 6, 2013) -- The Marines are on a "slingshot" course that will take them straight home to Fort Campbell, Ky.
Elements of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, known as the Rakkasans, entered their equipment in a theater equipment planner, carefully checking and rechecking the serial numbers, reviewing the -their bureaucracy, they convoyed for hours, with 17 vehicles that eventually entered the Bagram Asset Relief Team Redistribution, or RPAT, yard, February 18. The unit was ready to pass the vehicles to bring them closer to redeployment.

Nicknamed "Operation Slingshot," the Rakkasan equipment transfer was planned according to the model used to land the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, in September 2012. Using the model and lessons taken, the Rakkasan built their process with early coordination with Dredging with RPAT staff.
"Our soldiers arrived at Bagram last night, set up their vehicles and got everything ready to go out this morning," said Capt. Travis S. Hunter, who has been at Bagram for about six weeks to serve as a liaison with the AFSB battalion. Bagram, 401 Field Support Brigade. "Major (Brett) Ayvazian briefed them on what to expect and then they started the Four Corners process."
The term "Four Corners" refers to removing excess stock classes from vehicles in one location, as opposed to going to multiple locations to dispose of excess stock. Operation Four Corners at Bagram is led by the 1st Sustainment Brigade, which takes supplies to a retrosort yard where they can be reused or disposed of.
Hunter said he expects the handing over of the 17 vehicles to be completed in about eight hours. The Lt. Col. James Davis and Ayvazian were of "great help" and that the RPAT staff was able to perform multiple actions simultaneously to speed up the process, he added.

"We have completed the first Operation Four Corners for the 3rd Brigade," said Master Sgt. Sheldon Mayfield, support operations noncommissioned officer. "We delivered three vehicles yesterday and the guys said it was 'too easy'."
"The process is really, really fast once the paperwork is in place," Ayvazian said. "The paperwork comes in while the vehicle is still at Four Corners."
Ayvazian said the soldiers who gave the papers had one signature missing. Since the paperwork was reviewed while the vehicles were still in the Four Corners process, one of the battalion chiefs responsible could come to the RPAT yard and sort it out. We thought we'd seen it all, but then a batch of these units arrived at our warehouse from the same supplier that brought us the GTX-3 Competition Slingshot.
